David West is a commercial pilot by trade but wanted to find a home that reminded him of his in-law’s home along the Red River in Texas, where his wife’s father was a peanut and soybean farmer. David recalls fondly how much he loved visiting on the weekends and any chance he could. Although David and his wife raised their children in Oklahoma City, they later moved to Denver, Colorado. It wasn’t until they had grandkids that they knew they needed to move back to be closer to family.
They purchased 20 acres with a pond, woods and open pastures on the site of what used to be an old crop duster airport. But when it came time to secure a loan to build their new home, the Wests struggled to find a lender willing to work with them.
“Luckily, we heard about Rural 1st and they were the answer to our dreams,” David explained. “It was so easy to work with them and they were so accommodating and understanding of the specific needs of someone looking to live in the country—they just get it.”
Nervous at first that they wouldn’t like living in a rural community, they soon grew to love the views they’d never experienced in the city, such as the sunset reflecting off their barn and the stars in the sky. Since their move, the Wests have also adopted a menagerie of furry and feathered friends, including chickens, cats and a miniature donkey.
“I love being out here,” David said. “There’s nothing to disturb you but there’s always something to do.”
