Rural 1st is proud to be a primary sponsor of the Ohio Military Kids — or OMK — Camp, supporting through monetary contributions that allow camp attendees to register at a reduced cost. The OMK was established in 2005 through a partnership with Ohio 4-H Youth Development and is a crucial support system for military-connected youth. The purpose of the camp is to gather children who share the experience of being part of a military family to create positive outcomes based on their unique circumstances.
According to the 4-H team, following 9/11, when National Guard and Reserve members faced frequent, lengthy and often dangerous deployments, this military experience happened suddenly for many children. “Military kids have another layer on their cake. They’ve got the occasionally isolating experience of being in a military family,” Camp Administrator Theresa Ferrari said. This isolation often meant their classmates and friends couldn’t understand the impact of a parent missing important life milestones.
The Kelleys Island Experience
The essence of the OMK program centers on two key themes: connection and resilience. “If I had one word to sum it up, it would be connection,” Theresa said.
The OMK Camp is a five-day, four-night adventure on Kelleys Island in northern Ohio. While there, campers are not permitted to use cell phones or electronics. The remote setting prompts participants to disconnect so they can connect with each other.
The activities — including sailing, archery, swimming, crafts and line dancing — are designed to build life skills. Shared living space in cabins, daily chores and navigating challenges with peers fosters independence and cooperation.
The camp’s long-term impact has been seen by the 4-H team. Many former campers have since become counselors and shared that the connections they forged have lasted long after the five-day camp. “We have lifelong friends, they're even in each other’s weddings! They maintain the connections they make long after camp is done,” Theresa said, speaking about the lasting bonds.
Unique Support System
Through a partnership with the Department of Defense, the camp staffs both military service members and behavioral health counselors each week. This support addresses not only military-specific challenges but also general youth mental and emotional health needs.
The ability to offer this subsidized program is made possible through partnerships like Rural 1st, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to entry.
